Bank account details

This text refers to the Steuererklärung 2022 online. You can find the version for the Steuererklärung 2024 at:
(2024): Bank account details

What do IBAN and BIC mean and where can I find them?

IBAN stands for "International Bank Account Number" and refers to the bank account number. It is a globally valid number for a current account. So far, the IBAN has only replaced the previous combination of account number and bank sort code in international payments. The IBAN is now standard for cross-border payments within the EU and EFTA countries.

The abbreviation BIC stands for "Bank Identifier Code". The BIC, in addition to the IBAN, allows the account details to be assigned to a financial institution. The BIC includes the name of the recipient bank, the country code, and a branch identifier. The BIC enables financial institutions worldwide to be uniquely identified.

You can find both numbers on your bank statement.

If you do not have a corresponding account, do not provide any information about the account details on this page and please contact your responsible tax office.

Note 2: If you do not want to provide bank details, you can simply leave the fields blank. In principle, however, refunds from the tax office are paid out non-cash. If you do not provide your bank details, the tax office will ask for your bank details and it will take longer to get your refund in the account. If you do not have bank details, the tax office will send you a crossed check to the address provided.
